Val McDermid is one of the best mystery authors writing today. Aside from the fact that she lives in a country I don't know well, and writes about that country (Scotland), She is simply outstanding. You can't go wrong with one of her books. She is an excellent writer with well-developed characters, her unique method of storytelling (flashbacks for the characters' history--you'll see when you read the book) makes for a great story, and the plots are to die for. Some of her books ("A Place of Execution") run VERY dark, but others, like this one, although also quite dark, end with the main character experiencing a life she never thought she might.

Great story but I found the 2 story lines and even more--the different times frames used and shifted from frequently difficult to follow. I don't mind flashbacks in a cold case book but when you are following two stories and have several time frames in both, it became difficult to follow. My book club friends who have read other of this author's books indicate that time shifts occur in future books but not as frequently as this and the better books are very dark in their stories.
Power, wealth and stubborn self-righteousness with a mix of other's hard times and the frailties of human beings bring a collage of actors from the top, middle and bottom of the social strata to a dreaded mix none would have wanted or dreamed possible. Fascinating travel through all the character's lives from the UK to Italy and back, twice, with all their local color vividly described is a trip worth taking!
Still the best living writer in UK but brilliant plot wrapped up with unsatisfactory conclusion. No catharsis for this reader who believes murder must be punished and the powerful laid low for their criminal offenses. And the miners- with Mick as surrogate- avenged..
Just when you're sure you've figured it out, another turn throws you off! Reading this book is like riding a roller coaster with lots of ups, downs and twists! Great book! I couldn't put it down! Now to get something to eat, finally.
I loved the main character. She was sassy, strong and intelligent, and exactly the kind of female character I enjoy following in my novels. The plot was moderately suspenseful, and not nearly as dark or cutting edge as say Tana French's In the Woods, Flynn's Gone Girl, or Girl on a Train, but it was a refreshing plot in the end because I was wondering if and how the threads of two separate crimes were going to come together. A worthy read!
I was given Out of Bounds for Christmas and just got around to reading it last week. I have since bought all of the other 3 DCI Karen Pirie books and have devoured the first two. They are so well written, they are neither predictable nor do they have stupid twists that you could never have guessed (or believed). I have something like 20 more books of hers to look forward to!
One had to pay too much attention to the time period of the story. It constantly flashed back to the past and then back in the present. The Scottish vernacular was interesting to deal with at times. Found myself looking up words frequently to understand there use. Slang mostly to which I was unaccustomed. The story was told through the eyes of two people, a reporter and a police investigator and they were often at differing points of the investigation and on different crimes that turned out to be the same crime. The scenario moving to the ending was predictable for this reader. In summary, it was a good storyline but a challenging read.
