Sherlock Holmes: The Ectoplasmic Man by Daniel Stashower

April 1910: Sherlock Holmes meets Harry Houdini at the insistence of Inspector Lestrade, who tries to convince Holmes that Houdini has supernatural powers. Never one to shy away from a chance to show his brilliance, Houdini performs his “walk through a brick wall” trick.

While Lestrade is babbling on about Houdini and ectoplasm, Holmes begins to reveal how the trick is really done, to Houdini’s dismay. With Houdini angry and Holmes disgusted, the two part ways.

Later Bess Houdini visits Holmes. It seems there was bad blood between Houdini and a fellow performer who called himself Kleppini. In meeting this challenge, Houdini proved Kleppini a fraud. Now a note has arrived that reads ominously “We will see who is the fraud now!”

Doctor Watson is with Houdini during his stage show, and during the water torture trick, Watson ruins everything. Berated by an angry Houdini, Watson tries to explain when Lestrade suddenly appears to arrest Houdini for crimes against the Crown.

At the residence where Houdini had given a private show to government officials and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, a theft has occurred. Important government documents have been taken by a thief who left no trace. So Houdini is strongly suspected. Now it is up to Holmes to free him by discovering the truth behind the espionage. Along the way is danger, spiritualism, séances, masterful escapes, and mystery!

Mr. Stashower does a neat job of introducing an historical figure into a fictional world. The action is fast paced at times, the dialogue is superb, and the character interaction is top notch! Perhaps there may be less of an echo of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle than in other pastiches, but the story is solid enough to overcome this and stand on its own as a worthy Sherlock Holmes tale!

I will give this amazing story a full five out of five stars for originality and plot!

The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes The Ectoplasmic Man Daniel Stashower Books Reviews

Very Clever inter-mix of Houdini history w/Holmes and Watson. Stashower has a unique gift of blending history to current reading-for example
The Beautiful Cigar Girl (facinating) and The Hour of Peril.
These stories are great I love the mystery, and suspense. A real page turner.
The care you took when shipping. Thanks
Not much of a mystery. Did not have a Sherlock Holmes feel to it.
This was a very well written story about Sherlock Holmes and Watson. You can tell that Doyle didn't write it but it was close enough to suspend belief for a while. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson meet the Great Houdini, and we learn about some of his tricks and escapes during the adventure.
If you're a C. Doyle purist, forget it.

If not, you might very well love this wild take.

I did.
Harry Houdini meets Sherlock Holmes. I had reasonable expectations going into this book and I was disappointed.

I found a couple of occurrences in the book a bit hard to fathom. And, I didn't generally care for Stashower's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.

Holmes generally is not a polite guy. He is more interested in the cerebral and quite often steps on toes, not out of any intentional meanness, but more as an oversight. Yes, Mr Holmes, people have feelings. Stashower's Holmes, though, is outright surly at times.

I have always understood too that the rivalry between Holmes and Lestrade mellowed over time and became a bit more of a working relationship. This adventure was to have been a late-career case for Holmes and yet, Stashower has the level of antagonism between the two at a higher level than I recall even in the earliest ACD adventures.

That being said, this novel just didn't work for me.
