"The Last Goddess is a very exciting, smoothly written adventure that will stay in my collection to be re-read someday, which is not something I offer to many novels." --Doubleshot Reviews
"I have never come across such a perfectly hidden and brilliantly effected (plot) twist." --CS Fantasy Reviews
When a man discovers the body of the long-lost Messiah, he fears her very presence might incite a holy war. When she wakes up, he is certain of it...
Nathan Rook never had much use for faith. As a soldier in the last war, he witnessed first-hand the devastation wrought by the ageless religious schism so deeply dividing his country. But when he discovers an ancient coffin and finds a living, breathing woman inside, he believes he may have stumbled across the greatest discovery in history—or the greatest hoax. From her ceremonial dress to her elaborate tattoos, the mysterious woman is the perfect incarnation of the Messiah, and she wields a power that defies the very laws of magic. There’s just one problem she doesn’t remember anything, not even her own name.
As he strives to restore her memory, Rook realizes it might not matter if she is the genuine Messiah or not. Once word of her discovery gets out, every faction in the city will seek to claim her legendary power as their own. Together they struggle to evade a mad prince, a renegade general, and a power-hungry senator, but he has yet to confront the biggest problem of all he might be falling in love with her.

I had something of a hard time getting into this book, but after a while I got drawn into the story and the characters in a major way. I am generally reluctant to read "book one of X" because so often I find that book one just isn't enough to get me interested, a teasing glimpse and then "to be continued."I thought this, however, was a good solid "book one" because there were some actual resolutions, or at least a natural closing point rather than a forced cliffhanger. I was entertained and felt satisfied at the end, like a good stopping point had been reached, but was still interested in reading more about the world.
I am not *entirely* sure whether I missed some clues along the way or whether the author deliberately withheld some rather vital information for the purposes of a major plot twist. When I came to the realization, and I'm really trying to avoid spoiling things here, that all was not quite as it had been portrayed (or at least as I had read it), my immediate reaction was "Hey, that's cheating!" However, my second thought was that it was actually a *very* clever way to handle it, and my third was that I might just be oblivious to clues and signposts. As I have thought more about it, my ultimate opinion is much more on the "very clever" rather than "cheating" and I have to appreciate an author who can hoodwink me so thoroughly.
At any rate, the twist did catch me by surprise, obviously, and there were other unexpected twists and turns along the way.
In some respects, the characters are something of standard types - it would be fairly easy to come up with labels for them, like Tough but Sensitive. However, in my opinion, the author is able to take the characters beyond the label. I liked the central three (then four) quite a bit and they were charming people rather than cardboard props.
I do think the book could benefit from some additional polishing. However, in its favor, the errors obviously weren't too distracting because I never started marking them in the Kindle, which I normally do when they start taking me out of the story.

I am a sucker for a touch of romance in otherwise hard-boiled SF and fantasy stories. This novel comes with both an interesting plot, some entertaining characters, a well-told story with both evil, hardship and suffering but also humour and friendship as well as a believable and grown-up romance. In short, entertaining and a good read, but without that extra something that makes you eager to read the sequel.
My fingers feel like they're about to explode because I don't even know where to start. I loved this book right from page one. The characters all seemed so real and the fighting sequences were fantastic! The plot twists were unexpected and I loved everyone. I wish I could write about it but I don't want to spoil anything! You have to read this book!
When I started reading THE LAST GODDESS after "buying" it from Best Sellers, Top 100 Free List, my first thought was why-in-the-heck haven't I ever heard of this book or its author, C.E. Stalbaum before?
The story, the world, the characters, and the writing are all outstanding. Warring religions and their allegiant countries provide an intricate backdrop for a fresh plot and the twists work.
I highly recommend this book. It deserves more than five stars.
This book was many things, but the most important of all was that it was--GOOD!
Nobody was more surprised than I was. I wasn't a fan of the cover, but downloaded it because of the mostly glowing reviews. After reading almost 20 percent of the book, I was seriously considering the possibility that the author just had a lot of friends and family. Don't get me wrong; the book was well written, with very few errors. The author had a great style, but the characters and the plot/action just wasn't reaching me. Being the stubborn type that always finishes what she starts, (even if that means speed skimming for the really horrible books) I determinedly kept reading. AND was subsequently rewarded by an enjoyable read.
It takes a while to get moving. It takes a while to know and warm up to the characters. The plot has a really surprising turn, which I enjoyed. The ending was well resolved and satisfying, but still makes you want to know what comes next for Rook, his comrades, and the Empress and her kingdom. I'm hooked enough that I'll be putting Book Two on my 'To Read' list. Suitable for any age group, as the romance and violence is not graphic.
I used to like trilogies/series type stories in the past but I've kind of got burned out with them anymore. Harry Potter, Eragon, and the constant supply of new "series" stories that every author seems to want to get people hooked on tend to get on my nerves, especially those that end in the dreaded "cliffhanger!" I will try a new one if the first book is free, but it's pretty rare that I get so caught up in the story that I want to buy more. As for the "Shattered Messiah Trilogy," the jury is still out.
I really did like "The Last Goddess," the first book in the trilogy. It kept me interested all the way through and I found myself identifying with and rooting for the good guys, especially Root and the mysterious girl they find in the coffin. I liked the loyalty of the good guys and that they were willing to risk their lives for each other. I also liked how most issues were resolved and most questions were answered to my satisfaction. Of course there are still a few things to be resolved which leads in to the next book, but if I stop here I can still be content.
With all that said, I'll admit that right now I'm actually tempted to buy the next in the trilogy to see if it's as good as the first one. I'll have to let you know if I do, but I do recommend this first book. It's good.
